Meet Damianos
The Icon Painter of the Cave
Take the opportunity of meeting Damianos, the icon painter of the caves.
A gentle man of huge talent will introduce you to the technique of icon painting.
He has transformed two caves, which are hidden in the canyon of Kera Spiliotissa, to cozy and amazing sacred shrines, full of beautiful icons. He is a deeply spiritual man but a completely free spirit. In his works he includes the saints of hairdressers, guitarists and doctors.
You will learn how the painter is preparing the icons, which sacred rules he has to follow, the use of the colors and the meaning of the saints.
Damianos is also a musician, he plays the traditional Cretan Lyra and writer of four spiritual books about healing. The church of Rogdia is entirely painted by him, but still he is a humble man of inherent humor.
After visiting Damianos we will continue our way to the beautiful and traditional village of Rogdia with a breathtaking view.
You will really get to know the Cretan way and at the end of our excursion, we will go to one of the traditional taverns enjoying a typical Cretan meal!
